On May 22, 2022, Sammy Kanter (originally from Cincinnati,OH) married Zvi Zobin (originally from Toronto, Canada). The wedding was at the Renaissance in Downtown Cincinnati, officiated by Rabbi Keilah Lebell. The ceremony was a blending of Jewish traditions and rituals. Since this was a gay wedding of an orthodox-raised Jew and a reform-raised Jew, traditions included a tisch, kabbalat panim, circling, ring exchange and lively sheva brachot. The couple wrote their own ketubah.
Sammy's family includes his parents, Mark and Marcy Kanter of Cincinnati, his sister Annie Kanter of Cincinnati, his paternal grandparents, Robert and Lynne Kanter of Cincinnati, and his maternal step grandmother, Marcia Lang of Scottsdale, AZ. His maternal grandparents Herbert and Muriel Lang of Scottsdale, AZ are deceased.
Zvi's family includes his parents, David and Zena Zobin of Toronto, and siblings Michael (Mindy) Zobin of Montreal, Ora (Ron) Somogyi of Toronto, Miriam (Jonathan) Gisser of Columbus, OH, and Nechama (Matan) Gilboa of Tel Aviv. His maternal grandmother, Bracha Vatenmakher, lives in Toronto, and his maternal grandfather, Yaakov Moshe Vatenmakher, and his paternal grandparents, Zvi and Nina Zobin of Montreal, are deceased.
The couple met when both were living in New York City. They were both involved in a fellowship with the Jewish organization, Resetting the Table. Sammy sent a friend request to Zvi on social media after they attended the same event in September of 2015, but they did not speak then. They ran into each other in December at a bar on the Upper West Side, and they spoke for the first time. Zvi handed Sammy a business card, and Sammy then asked Zvi out on a date. The rest is history! The couple then moved to Jerusalem with Sammy's studies in 2018, then relocated to LA in 2019. In July of 2021, Zvi proposed to Sammy at Disneyland in Los Angeles as the sun set behind the castle.
The couple resides in Los Angeles, CA. Sammy is a fifth year rabbinical student at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in LA, and Zvi is the Director of Membership and Community Giving at the synagogue IKAR.
