Rabbi Meredith Faye Kahan will be installed as K.K. Bene Israel/Rockdale Temple’s tenth Senior Rabbi in its almost two hundred year history on Friday night, August 26, 2022.  The community is invited to celebrate with Rabbi Kahan and the Rockdale congregation beginning with a festive Shabbat Nosh at 5:45 p.m. followed by Shabbat Services in Rockdale’s Messer Chapel at 6:15 p.m. where Rabbi Kahan will be installed by her Cincinnati rabbinic colleagues.   Dinner will follow in the Mayerson JCC Amberley Room.

Rabbi Kahan is a lifelong Cincinnatian. She began her Jewish education at Rockdale Temple and considers herself a proud product of the Cincinnati Jewish community and the Reform Movement. She was ordained in 2013 on the Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) where she wrote her thesis on teaching children to pray.  While she was a student, she was Rockdale’s Rabbinic Intern for two years under the mentorship of Rabbi Sigma Faye Coran, z”l.  Following her ordination, Rabbi Kahan served Rockdale Temple as Assistant (later Associate) Rabbi & Educator.  Rabbi Kahan was elected Senior Rabbi in March 2021 after serving as Interim Senior Rabbi.

Rabbi Kahan is a graduate of The Ohio State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work.  She is the Vice President of the Greater Cincinnati Board of Rabbis, has served on the board of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati and as the Chair of the Cincinnati Jewish Educators Council, and is a member of the steering committee of Cincinnati’s Festival of Faiths. A leader in the Reform Movement, she serves on the faculty of Goldman Union Camp Institute, is a supervisor of The Jewish Foundation Fellows Program at HUC-JIR, and a member of the Women’s Rabbinic Network.  Her latest accomplishment is being selected for the initial cohort of The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati’s Reflect Cincy grant in collaboration with 18Doors (formerly InterfaithFamily) to work with interfaith couples in their first year of parenthood. Rabbi Kahan is married to Sean Flowers, and they are proud parents of Seth, Becca, and Sari.

Abby Schwartz, who is chairing the Installation weekend after having served as co-chair of Rabbi Kahan’s Search Committee with Aaron Herzig, commented, “We are delighted to celebrate the installation of Rabbi Kahan as the tenth Senior Rabbi of Congregation Kehal Kodesh Bene Israel/Rockdale Temple.  Rabbi Kahan’s history with Rockdale goes back to her childhood, and she is poised to lead the congregation to its Bicentennial in 2024 and beyond.  This is a joyous milestone for our congregation and the entire community.”

Sally Korkin, President of Rockdale Temple, added, “The Board of Directors of Rockdale Temple is proud of our Senior Rabbi, and we look forward to honoring her as she is installed on August 26.  Rabbi Kahan‘s holy partnership with our congregation and her leadership in the Greater Cincinnati Jewish community is exemplary.  I look forward to working side by side with Rabbi Kahan as we approach our Bicentennial year in 2024 and celebrate the 200th anniversary of K.K. Bene Israel/Rockdale Temple, the oldest congregation west of the Allegheny Mountains.”
