The Hoxworth Blood Center’s mobile donor bus came to the parking lot of the Mayerson JCC on Sunday, July 26, 2020 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a Jewish Community Blood Drive, sponsored by the JCC, Golf Manor Synagogue and Congregation Zichron Eliezer.
According to Chad Figgs, manager of the Hoxworth mobile donor bus, this was the first time the bus had been to the JCC; previous blood drives had been inside the facility, but the bus was used on this occasion in order to reduce contact with non-donors. In order to maintain social distancing, donations were by appointment and only one donor could be on the bus at a time.
In addition to the use of the bus and the reduction in the number of donors the bus could serve due to social distancing, other special measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 included taking the temperature of each donor twice—once before boarding the bus and again immediately before donating—and wiping down every surface after every donor.
Figgs said, “Everyone has been very generous, everyone has been very understanding.”
