Congregation Etz Chaim celebrated the Shabbat on which the Torah portion with the story of Noah is read by hosting dinner and a petting zoo on Friday, October 8. Undeterred by rain earlier in the afternoon, the congregation gathered in the parking lot and was visited by Noah himself (Executive Director Hank Lehrer) as they welcomed Shabbat.

“There were 40 minutes of rain, but then the sun came out — perfect for Parshat Noach,” quipped Youth and Family Program Director Chava Vidal. By evening, the weather was perfect for al fresco dining. The dinner was dairy but animal-themed, with platters of sandwiches arranged to form a baguette-section snake.

A sheep, baby goats, rabbits, ducklings and chicks were supplied by a local educational farm. Of course, the children loved the animals, which seemed to enjoy being petted, and families stayed late into the evening.
