(JNS) The number of Jews worldwide stands at roughly fifteen point two million, according to statistics released by the Jewish Agency for Israel on the eve of the Jewish new year 5782.
That number is up from fifteen point one million the last Jewish new year (5781).
The number of Jews in Israel is nearly six point nine million (compared to six point eight million in 5781). The number of Jews living outside the land of Israel is eight point three million, of which six million are in the United States, according to an Israeli government press statement.
The percentage of Jews living in Israel out of all the Jews in the world stands at forty-five point three percent, an increase of half a percent over the previous year. The estimated number of Jews in the United States increased by three hundred thousand following a new survey by the Pew Research Center.
The numbers include those who define themselves as Jews and don’t identify with another religion.
The updated estimates by Professor Sergio Della Pergola of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem will be published in the American Jewish Year Book 2021.

The Netherlands: thirty thousand
Belgium: twenty-nine thousand
Italy: twenty-seven thousand
Switzerland: eighteen thousand five hundred
Chile: sixteen thousand
Uruguay: sixteen thousand
Sweden: fifteen thousand
Turkey: fourteen thousand five hundred
Spain: thirteen thousand
Austria: ten thousand
Panama: ten thousand
An estimated twenty-seven thousand Jews live in Arab and Muslim states: fourteen thousand five hundred in Turkey, nine thousand five hundred in Iran, two thousand in Morocco and around one thousand in Tunisia.
Another thirty-eight countries have Jewish populations of 500 or fewer.
