Mrs. Fannie Straus, mother of Charles Straus and the late Henry and Isadore Straus, Cincinnati cigar merchants, celebrated the ninety-fifth anniversary of her birth at her home, 704 South Crescent, avenue, Avondale, Sunday, September 7. Mrs. Straus, who is noted for her philanthropies, sent a quality of ice cream to the inmates of the Old Men’s Home on Burnet avenue as a greeting in honor of her birthday anniversary, as has been her custom for many years. Many friends of the venerable woman visited her home during the day to extend their congratulations.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Obama told Jewish leaders in a July meeting that Israel needs to “engage in serious selfreflection.” Israel’s new U.S. ambassador was “summoned” to the State Department to be lectured about Israel’s building settlements in Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called two top aides to Obama “self-hating Jews.”
